In short

Dock leveller repair covers finding and fixing faults on the bridge between the dock and the trailer bed, including hydraulic cylinders, hoses and power packs, safety and check valves, lip hinges and lip cylinders, platform and lip damage, toe guards and control panels. It applies to swing-lip, telescopic-lip, mechanical and edge-of-dock levellers, with the aim of returning each one to safe working order.

Where does this fit at a dock in Lancashire?

Insurer inspections at sites around Lancashire may list leveller defects that need attention, and we can price each item directly from the report. Distribution docks in Lancashire that run several shifts put heavy cycles through leveller hydraulics, so leaks and slow operation can show up sooner.

Docks in Lancashire receiving trailers at widely varying bed heights can wear lip hinges faster, and hinge rebuilds are a routine part of leveller repair.

Servicing and repairs work slightly differently from installations. Visits to sites in Lancashire are chargeable, and the price is set out in writing before anyone comes out. To help us prepare, send photos of the equipment and the fault. The engineer carries out the agreed work, flags anything else that needs attention and quotes it before touching it. Afterwards, a written report records the condition of each item.

What inspection rules apply to dock levellers?

Dock levellers are work equipment under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), so they must be maintained in a safe condition and inspected where deterioration could lead to danger. In Northern Ireland the equivalent is PUWER (Northern Ireland) 1999.

Engineering insurers commonly inspect dock levellers under PUWER at 12-month intervals. Their reports list defects, sometimes marked for action before further use, and repairs are often needed to clear them.

Most levellers are treated as work equipment under PUWER. A leveller designed or used to lift people may fall under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), with 6-monthly thorough examination. This depends on the equipment and how it is used; your insurer or competent person will confirm.

Levellers are made to BS EN 1398:2009, the dock leveller safety standard. HSE guidance notes that guards or skirting may be needed where something could be caught, so damaged toe guards are repaired as part of the job. See our guide to dock leveller inspections under PUWER and LOLER.

What happens on site during a dock leveller repair?

During a leveller repair the bay is closed, the leveller is isolated and propped, and the engineer works from the pit or deck to diagnose and repair the fault. Neighbouring bays normally keep working.

  1. Close the bay: no trailer on the dock, the door closed and forklifts kept away.
  2. Isolate and prop: the leveller is electrically isolated and locked off, and the platform raised and supported on its maintenance strut before anyone goes underneath.
  3. Clean and inspect: debris and spilt oil are cleared from the pit so the fault can be traced.
  4. Repair: parts are fitted or welded. Anything beyond the agreed scope is quoted first.
  5. Test: the leveller is cycled, the lip checked and controls tested before the bay reopens.

It helps if you can provide a clear bay, a contact on site, photos or labels showing the leveller type and size, and any insurer inspection report that lists the defect.

Regulations and approvals in England

Powered doors and dock equipment installed in England may carry the UKCA or the CE mark, and doors are covered by the product standard BS EN 13241. We hand over the relevant documentation for each item fitted in Lancashire. Planning and Building Regulations questions are never assumed either way: we check what applies before any work starts, so you know before work is booked.

Questions

Can you take over our existing loading bay maintenance arrangement?

Yes. Send us a list of the equipment at your Lancashire site, with makes, models and approximate ages if known, plus recent service or inspection reports. We will propose a planned maintenance schedule and price it per item per visit. The first visit records the condition of everything, so you have a clear starting point for future servicing.

Can you repair all makes of loading bay equipment?

We work on common makes and types of doors, dock levellers, shelters, seals and restraints. Parts availability varies, particularly for older or discontinued equipment, so it helps to send the make, model and photos of any data plates from your site in Lancashire. If original parts are not available, we tell you and price the alternatives, including replacement where that makes more sense.

Is it safe to keep using a leaking dock leveller?

No. A dock leveller leaking hydraulic oil should be taken out of use until it has been checked, because the leak may affect how the platform holds its position under load. Oil in the pit is also a slip and environmental hazard. Describe the leak and send photos so we can plan the repair.

How is the price for a leveller repair agreed?

You describe the fault and send photos, and we agree the visit price in writing before anyone attends. If the engineer finds more work is needed, it is quoted and only carried out once you approve it. The visit is chargeable, and the price is always agreed first.
