Scissor lift tables, in short

A scissor lift table, often called a dock lift, is a powered platform raised and lowered by a hydraulic scissor mechanism to move goods between two levels. At a loading bay it lifts pallets and pallet trucks from ground level to the height of a trailer bed, making it a practical alternative to a raised dock where forming one is not possible.

Is this right for your site in Liverpool?

Split-level buildings near Liverpool sometimes use scissor lift tables internally to move pallets between floor levels without relying on forklifts and ramps. Where ground conditions in Liverpool make a deep recessed dock costly, a pit-mounted or surface-mounted lift table can be the more practical option.

Older industrial buildings in Liverpool built with ground-level doors only can use a scissor lift table to load trailers without excavating the yard.

The survey is free, the quote is written and the price is fixed: that is how every installation in Liverpool begins. We then manage the work from start to finish. Fitting is carried out by specialist installers under our management, phased so the operation keeps moving, and nights or weekends can be booked by arrangement. On the final day we test the equipment with you and hand over the operating and maintenance information.

In the wider area around Liverpool, the Port of Liverpool and its Liverpool2 deep-water container terminal sit on the north docks. Docks with frequent trailer movements put more cycles on doors and levellers, which is why planned servicing matters.

Where are scissor lift tables used at loading bays?

Scissor lift tables are used wherever goods need to move between yard level and trailer height without a raised dock. They are a common answer for buildings that were never designed for articulated trailers.

  • Ground-level doors: older units, workshops and retail back doors with no dock.
  • Mixed fleets: the same lift can serve a van, a rigid lorry and an articulated trailer at different bed heights, typically from around 900 mm to 1,600 mm.
  • Tight sites: where there is no room for a recessed approach ramp in the yard.
  • Split levels: inside buildings with floors at different heights.
  • Supplementing a dock: one lift beside a row of docks to handle vehicles that do not suit the levellers.

Our guide to converting a ground-level door into a loading dock compares lift tables with the other ways of reaching trailer height.

What inspections does a scissor lift table need under LOLER?

A scissor lift table is lifting equipment, so it needs a thorough examination under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) at least every 12 months. If it lifts people, such as an operator riding with a pallet truck, the interval is every 6 months, unless a competent person draws up a written examination scheme instead. Which applies depends on the equipment and how it is used; your insurer or competent person will confirm.

In Northern Ireland the equivalent is LOLER (Northern Ireland) 1999, and the regulator is HSENI rather than HSE.

Thorough examination is separate from routine maintenance. The lift is also work equipment under PUWER, so it must be maintained in a safe condition between examinations.

We specify lift tables to BS EN 1570-1:2024, the current safety standard for lifting tables, and explain the examination regime at handover. Planned loading bay servicing can be arranged to fit around the examination dates.

Options to discuss

Safety bellows and skirts

A flexible enclosure around the scissor mechanism that keeps hands, feet and debris out of shear and crush points, and helps keep the mechanism clean.

Pit-mounted dock lift

Set in a concrete pit so the platform lowers flush with the yard, letting pallet trucks drive straight on. The best choice for frequent, heavy loading at a fixed door.

Regulations and approvals in England

Workplace safety in England is regulated by HSE. For a loading bay in Liverpool, that means doors meeting regulation 18 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, equipment maintained under PUWER and suitable safeguards against vehicles driving away too early. We check what applies at survey and design the bay accordingly.

Questions about scissor lift tables in Liverpool

Will you deal with building control and planning for a project in Liverpool?

We check at survey whether the work is likely to need approval. Forming a new opening or dock pit may need Building Regulations approval, a building warrant or building control approval, depending on the nation, and external structures such as loading houses can need planning permission. Where approval is needed, we explain what is involved, work with your designer or agent, and build it into the programme.

Do you remove and dispose of the old equipment?

Yes, where it is part of the scope. When we replace doors, levellers, shelters or seals at a site in Liverpool, removal and disposal of the old equipment can be included and is itemised in the quote, so it is clear what is covered. If anything should be kept, such as a frame or motor that is still serviceable, we agree that at survey.

How do you price scissor lift tables for a site in Liverpool?

Guide budgets for supply and fit are £9,500 to £28,000 per lift, excluding VAT. The figure moves with size, insulation, the operator, electrics, access, any pit or groundworks and out-of-hours working. Where levellers are involved, the guide assumes an existing, sound pit. After the free survey you receive a fixed written quote, and that is the price for the agreed scope.

How often does a lift table need servicing?

A lift table needs routine maintenance as well as its LOLER thorough examinations. Many sites combine the two so the lift is serviced shortly before each examination. The right maintenance frequency depends on how heavily the lift is used, and we agree it with you at handover.

Does a scissor lift table need a pit?

No, a scissor lift table does not always need a pit. Surface-mounted lifts stand on the existing floor with a short ramp at the bottom. A pit lets the platform sit flush with the yard so pallet trucks roll straight on, which suits frequent or heavy loading. We recommend one or the other at survey.
