A vehicle restraint is a device at a loading bay that physically holds a trailer against the dock until it is safe to leave. In the UK most systems act on the rear wheel, either as a powered wheel-based restraint or a sensor wheel chock. Restraints guard against early drive-away and trailer creep, and are usually interlocked with the door and dock traffic lights.
What should sites in County Antrim consider?
New-build distribution sheds in County Antrim can have restraint rails and ducting planned into the yard slab from the start, which is simpler than cutting them in later. Restraint systems for sites in County Antrim are surveyed, quoted and installed in the same way as anywhere else in the UK, with a fixed price set out in writing.
Third-party hauliers visiting sites in County Antrim may not know each site's procedures, so a restraint that holds the wheel removes reliance on every driver following instructions.
A single contact at Loading Bay Doors handles your project in County Antrim from start to finish. The free site survey and fixed written quote come first, with no obligation to proceed. We then book the installation for times that suit the operation, including out of hours by arrangement, and manage the specialist engineers on site. At the end we commission and test the equipment, walk your team through it and provide the documentation.
What is trailer creep and how does a restraint stop it?
Trailer creep is the gradual movement of a parked trailer away from the dock, caused by forklifts braking and accelerating as they drive on and off the trailer bed. Each movement pushes the trailer forward slightly, and over a full load the gap can grow.
Creep is more likely when:
- the trailer is uncoupled from its tractor unit and resting on its landing legs;
- air suspension or brakes have not been set correctly by the driver;
- forklifts are heavy, fast or carrying dense loads such as drinks or building materials;
- the yard falls slightly away from the building.
As the trailer moves, the leveller lip can lose its bearing on the trailer bed, and in the worst case the lip slips off with a forklift on it. A wheel-based restraint holds the wheel against the rail or chock, so the trailer cannot travel forward however many times a forklift drives on and off.
How does a vehicle restraint work with dock lights and interlocks?
A vehicle restraint is normally linked to the dock traffic lights and the door controls, so engaging the restraint is what allows loading to start.
A typical sequence looks like this:
- The trailer reverses on to the bay with the outside light on green and the door closed.
- The restraint engages the rear wheel. The outside light turns red for the driver and the inside light turns green for dock staff.
- The door can now be opened, and the leveller can only operate once the door is fully open.
- When loading is finished, the leveller is parked and the door closed before the restraint can release.
- The restraint releases, the outside light turns green and the driver can leave.
The exact interlocks depend on your equipment and risk assessment. See dock traffic lights and interlocks for the options on signals and control logic.

Planning, building control and safety law in Northern Ireland
Energy requirements for non-dwellings in Northern Ireland are set by Technical Booklet F2. For new or replacement loading bay doors in County Antrim, we confirm the figure that applies to your project and check what applies at survey, rather than working to rules from elsewhere in the UK.
Questions
Will you deal with building control and planning for a project in County Antrim?
We check at survey whether the work is likely to need approval. Forming a new opening or dock pit may need Building Regulations approval, a building warrant or building control approval, depending on the nation, and external structures such as loading houses can need planning permission. Where approval is needed, we explain what is involved, work with your designer or agent, and build it into the programme.
How long does installation take at a site in County Antrim?
It depends on the equipment, the number of bays, the condition of the dock and whether any building or electrical work is needed. We agree a programme with you after the survey, setting out which bays are out of use and when. Larger jobs are usually phased so that part of the dock stays open, and out-of-hours working can be arranged.
Do vehicle restraints work with all trailers?
Wheel-based restraints and sensor chocks work with most trailers, because they act on the rear wheel rather than on the back of the vehicle. Vehicles with unusual wheel positions or very small wheels need checking, so we look at the vehicles you receive during the survey.
What happens if a powered restraint loses power?
Powered restraints are normally designed with a manual release so a trailer is not trapped on the bay if power is lost. Your site procedure should say who is allowed to use the release and what checks they make first. We explain the release method at handover.
