In short

A swing-lip dock leveller is a hydraulic ramp set into a pit at the dock edge, with a hinged steel lip along its front. When a trailer is docked the platform rises, the lip swings out, and the platform lowers until the lip rests on the trailer bed, forming a bridge for forklifts and pallet trucks. The lip is typically about 400 to 500 mm long.

Why do sites in Berkshire choose this?

Chilled food distributors in Berkshire can specify insulated swing-lip levellers with pit seals to cut cold loss through the floor of the bay. Should a recent insurance inspection at a site in Berkshire have flagged leveller defects, a survey can show whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Ageing levellers in older docks around Berkshire can often be replaced like for like in the existing pit, avoiding new concrete work if the pit is sound.

It starts with a free site survey in Berkshire, where we measure the openings, check the dock and talk through how the bay is used. You then receive a fixed written quote. Once you accept, we manage the job: specialist installation engineers carry out the work under our management, planned around your deliveries, and out-of-hours working can be arranged. At handover we test everything with you and leave the documentation.

What wears out on a swing-lip dock leveller?

The lip hinge, hydraulic hoses and seals are usually the first parts to wear on a swing-lip leveller, and planned servicing finds most of these problems before they stop a bay.

  • Lip hinge: takes an impact every time the lip lands, and suffers badly if trailers reverse into a lip that has not been stored.
  • Hydraulics: hoses, cylinder seals and power pack oil age and can leak.
  • Velocity fuse: the safety valve that stops the platform dropping if a trailer pulls away must be tested.
  • Toe guards and maintenance strut: must be intact and working. HSE guidance notes guards or skirting may be needed where something could be caught.
  • Dock bumpers: worn bumpers let trailers strike the leveller and dock edge.

A leveller with a cracked lip hinge, a bent platform or repeated hydraulic leaks may be better replaced than repaired. Service and repair visits are chargeable and agreed before anyone attends.

How long should a dock leveller platform be?

A leveller platform should be long enough to keep the slope gentle across the full range of trailer heights you load, because the steepest gradient decides which handling equipment can use it safely. A longer platform spreads the same height difference over a greater distance.

  • Know your trailer mix: with a dock typically around 1,200 mm high and trailer beds ranging from roughly 900 to 1,600 mm, the height difference can be considerable.
  • Check your equipment: low-clearance electric pallet trucks cope with less gradient than a counterbalance forklift with good ground clearance.
  • Common lengths: platforms are commonly made from around 2 to 3.5 m long, with longer units where trailers sit very low or very high.
  • Width: a wider platform gives more room when pallets sit close to the trailer sides.

When replacing a unit, the pit size limits what can be fitted, so we measure the pit and record your trailer heights at survey before recommending a length.

Regulations and approvals in England

Powered doors and dock equipment installed in England may carry the UKCA or the CE mark, and doors are covered by the product standard BS EN 13241. We hand over the relevant documentation for each item fitted in Berkshire. Planning and Building Regulations questions are never assumed either way: we check what applies at survey, so you know before work is booked.

Questions

Can you work outside our normal operating hours in Berkshire?

Yes, by arrangement. Evening, night and weekend working can be planned so the installation causes as little disruption as possible to your loading schedule. Out-of-hours work can affect the price, so mention it at the survey and we will include it in the written quote. The agreed times are confirmed in the programme before the job starts.

Which building and safety rules apply to a site in Berkshire?

It depends on which UK nation the site is in. England and Wales use Building Regulations approval, Scotland uses building warrants and Northern Ireland uses building control approval from the council. Workplace safety is regulated by HSE in Great Britain and HSENI in Northern Ireland, and energy rules differ between nations. For your site in Berkshire, we check what applies at survey and design to it.

What happens if a trailer pulls away with the lip on its bed?

The platform drops until its safety system stops it. Hydraulic levellers have a velocity fuse that arrests the fall, but the event can still damage the leveller and endanger anyone on it, which is why dock traffic lights, restraints and key control are used to prevent early drive-away.

Can a swing-lip leveller be used as a ramp to the yard?

No, a leveller should only be used to bridge a docked trailer. The lip and toe guards are designed to work with a trailer bed in place, and the platform is not built as a ramp down to yard level. Where you need ground-level access, a separate door or a lift table is the safer answer.
