Loading bay equipment for food and drink manufacturing sites

Food and drink manufacturers need loading bays that keep out pests, dirt and weather, protect chilled goods and stand up to cleaning. We recommend equipment chosen for hygiene, temperature control and work around production.

What matters at the dock

  • Close-fitting shelters, seals and pit seals that keep insects, birds, rodents and dust out of the building.
  • Finishes and electrical enclosures that stand up to the site's washdown routine and cleaning chemicals.
  • Insulated doors and inflatable shelters that protect chilled finished goods between store and trailer.
  • Leveller pits that can be safely propped open and cleaned as part of the hygiene schedule.
  • Installation and servicing planned around production, with hygiene rules agreed before any work starts.

What does a food factory need from its loading bays?

A food factory needs loading bays that protect product safety as well as moving goods, because the dock is an opening in the building's hygiene and temperature barrier. Raw materials, packaging and finished goods all pass through it. Different products bring different needs: a bakery may be most concerned with dust and pests, while a dairy, meat or ready-meal plant will put temperature and washdown first.

  • Pest control: gaps around doors, levellers and trailers let in insects, birds and rodents.
  • Cleanability: surfaces, pits and frames should not trap dirt, product or standing water.
  • Temperature: chilled goods must not warm up between store and trailer.
  • Separation: raw material intake and finished goods dispatch are often kept apart.

Your food safety and customer audits will look closely at the dock, so we recommend equipment with those checks in mind and explain how each item is cleaned and maintained. Allergen controls may also affect which bays handle which goods.

How do you keep pests and dirt out at the dock?

Keeping pests and dirt out starts with closing every gap: around the trailer, under and beside the leveller, and along the door edges. A well-fitted shelter or seal closes the gaps around the trailer, while brush seals and pit seals reduce the gaps around the leveller.

Door bottom seals and side seals need regular checks, because a damaged seal soon becomes an entry point. Inside, PVC strip curtains or high-speed doors can separate the dock from production and packing areas.

Birds are a particular problem at docks under open canopies, so doors should not be left open between deliveries. Interlocks or automatic closing help where staff are busy, and your pest control contractor can point out weak spots for us to seal.

Leveller pits collect debris and spilt product, so we recommend levellers that can be raised and propped safely for cleaning, with the maintenance strut used every time. Our guide on dock shelters vs dock seals explains which closes the gap best for your vehicles.

Which dock equipment suits washdown and chilled areas?

Equipment for washdown and chilled areas should have corrosion-resistant finishes, electrical enclosures rated for the cleaning method, and insulated door panels that limit condensation. Galvanised or stainless steel components and sealed control boxes cope better with water and cleaning chemicals than standard painted parts.

For chilled dispatch we usually recommend:

  • Insulated sectional or cold store doors with thermal breaks to limit condensation on the warm side.
  • Inflatable dock shelters or dock seals for a close fit around refrigerated trailers.
  • High-speed doors between chilled stores and the dock, so cold air stays where it is needed.
  • Smooth, sealed surfaces on frames and housings so dirt and water do not collect.

Floors around the dock should fall away from the leveller pit, and pit drainage should be kept clear so washdown water does not stand under the platform.

We confirm your cleaning regime at survey, because pressure washing near motors, controls and hydraulic parts needs particular care.

How do you plan dock work around production and audits?

Dock work in a food factory is best planned around production downtime, with the work area screened and cleaned before handover so it does not create a hygiene risk. Installation can be arranged out of hours or during planned shutdowns, priced in advance.

  • Agree hygiene rules for engineers, such as protective clothing, jewellery and tool control, before work starts.
  • Phase bays so dispatch continues while one bay is upgraded.
  • Plan any pit or floor work so dust and debris are contained.
  • Keep service records, repair notes and manufacturer's documentation ready for audits.

After installation, the area should be cleaned to your standard before production restarts, with all packaging, fixings and offcuts removed. We set out the programme, working hours and any access needs in the written quote, so your hygiene and production teams can plan around them.

Questions

Are inflatable dock shelters suitable for food factories?

Yes, inflatable dock shelters suit food factories that dispatch chilled goods, because the cushions close around each trailer and reduce the gaps where air, dust and insects can enter. They cost more than retractable shelters, at £6,800 to £12,800 each excluding VAT, so for ambient goods a retractable shelter or dock seal may be enough. We recommend after looking at your vehicles and products.

Can dock equipment be cleaned with pressure washers?

Some dock equipment can be pressure washed, but motors, control boxes and hydraulic parts need suitable protection and care around them. If your cleaning regime uses high-pressure water or strong chemicals, tell us at survey so we can specify finishes and electrical enclosures to suit. The leveller must always be propped on its maintenance strut before anyone cleans the pit.

Can you install during our production shutdown?

Yes, installation and upgrades can be planned for production shutdowns, weekends or overnight, priced in advance in the quote. We agree hygiene rules, protective clothing and cleaning of the work area with you before starting, and phase bays so dispatch can continue where possible. Equipment with longer lead times is ordered early enough to meet the shutdown date.
