Retractable dock shelters in the Highlands

Planning retractable dock shelters for a site in the Highlands? We cover Inverness, Fort William, Aviemore and Dingwall, plus the rest of the area, and we can work out of hours by arrangement where the operation cannot stop.

In short

A retractable dock shelter is a fabric shelter fixed to the building around a loading bay door, with flexible top and side curtains carried on a sprung or pantograph steel frame. When a trailer reverses in, the frame retracts and the curtains drape against the trailer's sides and roof, closing most of the gap while leaving the full width of the trailer opening clear for loading.

Where does this fit at a dock in the Highlands?

For a dock in the Highlands where wide pallets need the full trailer opening, a shelter keeps that width clear while still closing the gaps. Docks facing open ground in the Highlands can catch rain driven sideways into the bay, which a well-fitted retractable shelter helps keep out.

Loading staff at a draughty dock in the Highlands notice the difference when the gaps around the trailer are closed, especially through the colder months.

For retractable dock shelters in the Highlands, we begin with a free site survey and a fixed written quote, so you know the scope and cost before committing. We take responsibility for managing the job, and specialist installation engineers carry it out under our supervision. Bays are taken out of use in a planned sequence so the rest of the dock keeps working, and evening or weekend work can be arranged. Each item is tested at handover and the documentation is left with you.

Why do trailer door hinges matter when choosing a shelter?

Trailer door hinges matter because the rear doors are opened and folded back along the trailer sides before reversing, and the shelter has to accommodate them. If the shelter is too shallow, the hinges and doors sit outside it, leaving gaps or snagging the curtains.

A shelter handles this better than a seal:

  • its side curtains drape over the opened doors and hinges rather than pressing against them,
  • the full width of the trailer opening stays clear, because nothing protrudes in front of the trailer's rear frame,
  • slit curtains wrap around hinge blocks without tearing.

By contrast, a dock seal presses against the rear of the trailer, so gaps at the hinges can remain, and poorly sized side pads can intrude into the opening. That is why shelters are generally favoured for mixed fleets, where hinge positions and trailer widths vary from one vehicle to the next.

How is a retractable dock shelter installed?

A retractable shelter is fixed to the outside face of the building around the dock door, working from powered access equipment in the yard. A single shelter usually takes a few hours to a day, depending on its size and the wall it fixes to.

  1. The wall is checked for fixing points; on cladding, a steel subframe or spreader plates are often needed.
  2. The frame is fixed and set level, centred on the door and leveller.
  3. Top and side curtains are hung and trimmed to meet the trailers you receive.
  4. Bumpers are checked, since they set how far the trailer pushes into the shelter.
  5. The shelter is tested with a trailer reversing in where possible.

You will need to keep the yard area in front of the bay clear for access equipment and take the bay out of use during fitting. No power supply is needed, and neighbouring bays can keep working while each shelter goes up.

Regulations and approvals in Scotland

Energy standards for buildings in Scotland are set out in Section 6 of the Building Standards Technical Handbook. For new or replacement loading bay doors in the Highlands, we confirm the figure that applies to your project and check what applies at survey, rather than relying on rules written for elsewhere in the UK.

Questions

Is VAT included in your guide prices for retractable dock shelters?

No. Our customers are businesses, so guide prices exclude VAT, which is added at the standard rate. The same guide range applies in the Highlands as everywhere else: for retractable dock shelters, it is £1,900 to £4,400 per shelter, excluding VAT. It covers supply and fit for a typical installation. Your fixed written quote after the free survey shows the net price, the VAT and exactly what is included.

Do you cover the Highlands for retractable dock shelters?

Yes. We take on retractable dock shelters for businesses in the Highlands and across the Highlands. We survey the site, provide a fixed written quote and manage the installation, with specialist installation engineers working under our management. Visits are arranged in advance at a time that suits your operation, and the same single contact stays with the job through to handover.

Does a dock shelter keep a building warm?

A shelter reduces the draughts and rain entering the dock around a trailer, which helps keep the loading area warmer. It does not seal as closely as a dock seal or inflatable shelter, so for chilled and frozen docks those options are usually preferred.

Can a shelter be fixed to a cladded wall?

Yes, but cladding on its own is not usually strong enough to carry a shelter. We fix through to the building's steel frame behind the cladding, or use a steel subframe or spreader plates to spread the load, and confirm the method after inspecting the wall.
